What are the differences between an LCD and a plasma display? Are LCD Televisions the same as Plasma Television? In a certain sense, one can say yes. However, technically speaking there is such a vast difference between a plasma and LCD television. In this article, I will give you all the differences in a practical manner, so you can analyze whether an LCD or plasma television is right for you.

You can say that LCD television and plasma television are very much alike, because they strive to achieve the same objective. The objective is simple -- a high-quality picture, that is lifelike. However, they approach solving this problem in very radically different ways.

LCD television screens use liquid crystals to display the image. Basically, these liquid crystals block and allow light to pass through them, and manipulate the light passage to form images on the screen. Plasma television, on the other hand, relies on a cellular structure, where each cell is produced by two glasslike pains, with a gas sealed in between those pains. That gas is then sent to an electrical charge, which displays color, and when all the cells are combined, produces a high-quality picture.

Two very different approaches, that both display pleasing results. However, because there's a vast difference in technology, there are also pluses and minuses between an LCD television and a plasma television.

LCD televisions will last longer, because it relies on light sources instead of gases to produce their images. LCD televisions have got a reputation that they will last forever, and while this is a bit of an exaggeration. Isn't too far off. Typically tests have shown that LCD televisions have a life and a 60,000 viewing hours. This is considerably more than a plasma television screen.

However, plasma televisions can be viewed from as far as 180° off-center, and not suffer from a picture distortion. Compare this to an LCD television, which generally starts to corrupt the picture if you are 80° or farther off center of the television. By offering a wider viewing angle, plasma televisions have an advantage when watching in large groups.

To make up for this, LCDs have a wonderful benefit in that they will never suffer from a color burnt image. If you left a video game on overnight on the television, it's high-resolution could potentially burn an image forever into a plasma television screen. But this will never be a worry for an LCD screen.
